Morse code was the first truly binary code used to send electronic messages. It used a system of dots and dashes to send messages over a wire. The Morse Code electronic alphabet was patented in 1840 by Samuel Morse. The original Morse code machines sent messages over a wire, which were then printed out on a paper tape. The telegraph operators soon learned to read messages from sound alone and the telegraph instruments were adapted to this new skill. The first telegraph message ever sent was, "What hath God wrought". Morse code is now used with radio signals as well as on wires.
